Denny Winston Dodd II lost his brief
battle with cancer on July 9, 2002, when he was a member of the Grandfather
Mountain Highlanders Pipe Band of the Triad. Denny was 57 years old.
He had played the bagpipes since he was 16 years old. Denny was never
destined to be a great piper, but that's not what he wanted out of
piping...he wanted to have fun and be around people he loved. The
details of Denny's piping career are not what will long endure in
the hearts of those who knew him. What made Denny stand apart was
who he was. Everyone who knew Denny loved him. He had a spirit and
personality that made him glow. Denny was a sincere man with a good
and kind heart. He was creative, compassionate, and loyal. Denny's
humility and zest for life served as both an inspiration and a model.
Denny lived the kind of life that those of us he left behind can only
try to emulate. It is to the memory of the very special man that the
Denny W. Dodd Memorial Scholarship has been established.
The Denny W. Dodd Memorial Scholarship
has been established to encourage members of the Jamestown Pipes and
Drums to develop Denny's zest for life, kind heart, compassion, creativity,
and loving fun filled spirit while improving their music skills by
attending piping schools, seminars and workshops where they can obtain
expert instruction from World-class pipers.
